All of the evening
bags featured on this page were carried by the Duchess of Leeds
in the 1930s and 1940s to formal engagements in Paris,
London, and New York. The Duchess was acquainted with Coco Chanel, Elsa
Schiapparelli, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, et al. We found all of
these bags tossed in a drawer along with numerous empty boxes of the same
size from Cartier. Most bags from Cartier during this period were unmarked.
During the war years the Duchess and her husband lived in the Claridge
in London. The Duke worked as a UXB Bomb diffuser while the Duchess worked
in secret as a nurse in a nearby hospital under a pseudonym. These bags
sparkle with grace, elegance, and class. |
